Collect the City

The action of collecting, the collector-producer and the nature of collections are at the center of urban art actions and research this semester. A significant direction in contemporary art, the practices of collecting and archiving raise today issues of memory and history, trace and document, public and private. Our intention is the investigation of discourses and desire of the city through personal scenaria, based on multifarious notions of collecting. By drifting through city spaces that remain opaque to the gaze (invisible urbanscapes), we develop snenaria and actions that accumulate traces and form open collections. The publishing of these collections and their re-installation in the city is one of the objectives of the work. The pathos of collecting and the utopia of complete collection, the culture of the fragment, the shock of montage and the folly of taxinomy are some of the topics we will discuss. We will also examine historical references, such as the Renaissance “wunderkammer”, the architecture of Sir John Soane, and work of artists (among others, Kurt Schwitters, Marcel Broodthaers, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Sophie Calle). The class will visit Sir John Soane’s museum in London.
